July 2023: Athletes Leaving Their Mark in National and International Competitions

Against all odds, our small yet mighty university team is demonstrating the sheer power and determination of our athletes! As the summer season unfolds, we are witnessing a breathtaking display of talent, as several of our outstanding athletes gracefully grace the grand stages of both national and international competitions, leaving spectators in awe of their prowess and performance.

First up were our throwing superstars Tazmin Fayle and Megan Lockwood who represented the Isle of Man at the NatWest International Island Games XIX in Guernsey. Both ladies represented the red and yellow proudly in multiple throwing events at the games, both making the final and achieving top 10 finishes. The full results from the games can be accessed here. Special mention has to be given to Tazmin, who pulled out a fantastic throw in the Discus to snatch the bronze medal - making her the first international medalist the team has had since it was formalised in 2018.

Our sprint hurdling master David Naylor was also out to impress at his first outdoor UK Athletics Championships in Manchester. To get to the start line for such a technical event after only racing over senior mens hurdle heights for two seasons is incredibly impressive. David was all smiles on the start line showing the confidence he has built from his impressive start to the season making the BUCS Outdoor finals in this event. He ran a superbly executed race and didn't let anything phase him despite his competitors clattering hurdles around him. David's final time would've been a PB except for an illegal wind but we know this is just the start for him.

But the action wasn't limited to track and field, our distance runners are also making waves. Chloe Leather earned her first ever England vest and represented Team England at the 48th International Snowdon Mountain race. She battled through some of the worst conditions the mountain could throw at her to finish 21st in the women's race and help Team England to a team victory. Not bad at all for her England debut!

In a nutshell, our university athletes competing on both national and international stages have blown us away with their incredible talent and unwavering determination. We couldn't be prouder as they represent our small university team, proving that size doesn't matter when it comes to greatness. They've are an inspiration not only to their peers and we are sure to many freshers as they look to join the team. With each triumph and hurdle they conquer, we excitedly look forward to what the future holds for this amazing team, united by their boundless pride and achievements.
